Quality & Safety Leaders' Critical Issues 2012
 Session Overview

Checklists are lifesaving tools in aviation and also in healthcare, where professionals have begun using them in operating rooms and other medical arenas. Now see how checklists can benefit patients directly, by giving them resources to help them advocate for themselves in healthcare situations. These checklists can also help build awareness about the patient advocate's role in patient safety.

Hear from patient advocate Karen Curtiss, who is actively developing checklists for patients with CampaignZERO, and learn how these checklists can be used as part of the management and engagement of patients in their own care. CampaignZERO was founded by Karen Curtiss after two family members fell victim to medical errors. CampaignZERO is Karen's way of transforming her family's tragedies into better outcomes for others.

St. David's Healthcare CMO Dr. Tom Knight will address emerging quality and safety issues faced by front-line organizations. He will share the strategies and tactics that his organization is using to drive improvement and high performance.

Learning Objectives

Checklists can also be used by patients and patient advocates to reduce breakdown in care processes and allow them to become active members of their care management teams.
  • As a result of the session, viewers will be able to develop a plan and engage their peers to use a checklist as part of the care process, with patients and their advocates as resources.
  • Understand the emerging critical patient safety and quality issues that healthcare quality and safety teams are facing in 2012, and how a front-line organization is tackling this dynamic environment and developing strategies for improved safety and high performance.
  • As a result of the session, viewers will be able to use the information provided in current and future quality and patient safety plans and activities.
